Blue Lake’s world-renowned Dell’Arte International School of Physical Theatre will again send members of their Professional Training Program (PTP) and First Year MFA (M1) students to Table Bluff for ten days of workshops, community building and performance, including classroom collaborations with Loleta Public Schools. The culmination of a year’s worth of study in Dell’Arte’s unique pedagogy, the ‘Rural Residency’ will take place May 20-30, 2019, in the area at and around the Wiyot Tribal Headquarters (1000 Wiyot Drive, Loleta, CA 95551). The week and a half of workshops and community service concludes with the creation of a final theatrical event on Wednesday, May 29 at 2:30 PM, inspired by the students’ time and work in the community. This celebration of Table Bluff is free of charge and open to all community members who would like to participate.

Dell’Arte’s 2019 Rural Residency consists of thirteen student actor-creators from Zimbabwe, New Zealand, Italy, Canada, and the United States who have been studying and training in Blue Lake, CA, for the past year. The Residency, now in its thirteenth year, allows for artistic e\ngagement and cultural exchange among Dell’Arte’s first year students, as well as educational opportunities for both community elders and children in mask making, dance, creative movement, juggling, watercolor painting, shadow puppetry and more. About the Wiyot Tribe and Table Bluff Reservation: Wiyot people have lived in the Humboldt Bay region for thousands of years. The North Coast of California is rich with abundant terrestrial, riverine, estuarine, and marine resources.

Wiyot people lived in permanent villages along the waterways which also served as travel and trade routes. Seasonal camps were made on the tribal lands and prairies, and mountainous regions provided berries, acorns, pine nuts, wild game, and basketry materials.

The mission of the Wiyot Tribe is to exercise our tribal rights and promote our common welfare, to establish the supreme law of the Tribe, to provide for and protect our sovereign right to exercise self-government pursuant to our own laws, to protect and develop our lands and resources, and to promote and safeguard our aboriginal rights as Wiyot people.
